We're inbound on Eva Airways Flight 18 from San Francisco departing at 1:40 AM Sunday Morning May 18, 2008 and arriving at 5:50 AM Monday morning May 19th. My traveling companions and I meet the representative from the Ambassador Hotel in Hsin Chu who has been sent to pick us up as we exit custom as Chang Kai Shek (TPE) Airport. He leads us to the front of the arrival terminal where a hotel van is waiting to drive us to our lodging in downtown Hsin Chu, the high tech center of Taiwan. Think of Hsin Chu in relation to Taipei, as Silicon Valley is to San Francisco, both in geography?Hsin Chu is about 40 or so miles south and west of the more cosmopolitan capital Taipei?and in state-of-mind?the former lives in the shadow of the latter. Leaving TPE we travel southeast on Taiwan National Highway 3 for a short distance until it intersects National Highway 1, which we merge onto and head southwest for the majority of our journey. We end on surface streets in Hsin Chu at the Ambassador Hotel, where a luxurious shower and incredible breakfast buffet awaits.
